Art Market

“Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar“, he said.

Give to artists what belongs to artists, we say.

A while ago, while one part of our town was sleeping, the other part was hurrying up to finish its work before dawn. The noise of people sharpening pencils was so loud that a red cardinal could not sleep and started observing the events.

Wow, he thought, this people resemble to the little men in Gulliver Travels with the difference that they are writing business plans. Business plans for what?, he wondered. City Council is visioning “Art” as the star of revitalizing Sooke!, vigorously chanted the little bird to his cousin on the other side of town. “Imagine how much money sponsors are going to invest! If according to the Fine Art Show’s last year booklet, this two week exhibit widely over passed the two hundred thousand dollars in revenues”, he stated.

These words sounded like the song of an angel to the yellow cardinal on the other side of town. Oops, I better wake up all the artists on this side before is too late, he answered. They need to hear about this successful art market that exists in Paris, Moscow and Amsterdam where people can find a variety of techniques such as: paintings, ceramics, jewels, sculptures, knitting, quilts, literature, and music. These art markets are open 365 days of the year, seven days a week and are known worldwide for being successful in attracting people. They are fun, they promote the concept of buying locally and they are encouraging for artists, businesses and our economy, he recalled.

At this point, the red cardinal flew to the same tree where his cousin was. Okay, the yellow cardinal exclaimed, history tells us that in the past artists had rebelled against those who wanted to control them. Why our artists do not do the same by creating their own artist association and by applying for municipal and sponsors’ grants themselves? In addition, council can help by hiring a recent university graduate from our community who has student loans to pay who will help artists write their own business plan.

If you are an artist please, come to see me. I am collecting names and phone numbers to reunite you all.

One Response to Art Market

  1. jeffrey v thomas says:

Art associations are for Artists, not bean counting fusspots who only apply paint and plaster to hide their faces. They are sham actors who lie to fund thier life styles and no truly support those who need the support fom a middle person or group who will guide them and encourage creative expression. The world is NOT thier stage, it is time for thier show to end. Power to the people, Govt Grants for Artists, not bean counters who take the most to promote the minimum to justify themselves…Im ranting, sorry, good luck peace JVT
